For the Sloppy Joe: • 2 tablespoons canola oil• 1 seeded and small diced bell peppers (green, red or yellow or combination)• 2 finely minced cloves of garlic• 1 kg ground beef• 1 cup tomato sauce or tomato puree• 1 tablespoons mustard• 2 tablespoons light brown sugar• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce• 1 tablespoons distilled vinegar• 1 tablespoons chili powder or cayenne pepper or to taste• Sea salt and cracked black pepper to taste• Buns For the Toppings: • caramelized onions• Gherkins pickles• 2 Cheese slices of your choice
1. Add oil to a large pan over low to medium heat and sweat the peppers and garlic for 5-7 minutes stirring frequently.2. Add in the ground beef, turn the heat to medium and cook until all of the pink is gone, about 7-9 minutes.3. Next, pour in the tomato puree, mustard, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar and chili powder and simmer over low heat for 25-30 minutes.4. Finish by stirring in salt and pepper and serve on toasted buns with optional toppings.
