INGREDIENTS
300g white bread flour4g yeast 6g salt10g sugar40g soft butter190g milk, at cool room temperature
For the garlic butter, simply combine:125g butter, softened 1 tablespoon garlic powder1 teaspoon mixed herbs 1 teaspoon chilli flakes
METHOD
In a large bowl, mix together flour, yeast, sugar and salt. Then add the butter and milk and knead to a soft, stretchy dough. Allow to proof for 2-3 hours.Punch down dough then shape it into a log. Place it on a baking tray and allow to proof again (lightly covered) until puffy and doubled in size. This can take 1 hour if your house is very hot or a good few hours in cold weather.Preheat oven well to 180°c. Bake the bread until lightly golden and cooked through. Do not allow to darken/crisp too much.Remove and cool completely on wire rack.Make slits and stuff generously with garlic butter. You can wrap it in foil and braai (bbq)/grill in the oven. We like to seperate the slices on the braai (bbq) stand as pictured above. Keep it on for a few moments on each side-they will be deliciously charred and crisp on the edges with a soft, buttery interior. Give it a try!
INFO & TIPS
Perfect make-ahead option - these stay well even if made a day or 2 in advance and, wrapped tightly in foil, stored in refrigerator.
