Commercial bread is full of chemicals- including yeast protein, dextrose, soya flour, vegetable fat, emulsifier, flour treatment agent, vinegar, ascorbic acid, calcium propionate (to slow down mould growth) and other unpronounceable additives.
None of these benefit you, they are only added to make the bread cheaper, prettier and softer.
Basic home bread, on the other hand, only has four ingredients -
flour, water, yeast and salt.
A mass-produced loaf can go from dough to packaged/shipped in an hour. Whereas homemade bread will have a long, slow rise which will make it delicious and easier to digest. There's just no comparison.
As they say, if the bread sticks to the roof of your mouth as you chew, don't even think what it will shortly be doing to your gut.
The average amount of bread consumed per person, daily, in South Africa is 100g (3 slices).
That's 36 kg per person a year.
Bread is not something to be taken lightly!
