I made these over the weekend for Haniyah (Hanis birthday) and packaged and tied them with red ribbons.
INGREDIENTS
8-10 apples3 cups white sugar½ teaspoon cream of tartar1 cup water2 teaspoon red food colouring Wooden sticks
METHOD
Step 1Wash and dry the apples, the stems remove and insert the sticks into the base. Set aside on a baking tray.
Step 2In a medium heavy-based saucepan, add the sugar and water over a low heat, the sugar must dissolved, stirring once the sugar is completely dessolved, stop stirring the mixture and bring it to the boil.
Step 3Now stir in the cream of tartar and food colouring.
Step 4Reduce heat to low and simmer the toffee for 15 20 minutes until it gets to hard crack stage. You need to work fast with the tooffe as it sets. A sugar thermometer can be used measure around 150 degrees. Or alternatively you can drop few drops into a glass of cold water, pull out the pieces to test for hard crack stage. Use kitchen gloves to protect hand from burns and colouring. .
Step 5Next turn off the heat and tilt your pan to dip the apples in the toffee. Stand the apples head down on the baking paper and leave to set at room temperature.
