Also called flour buttercream, this old-fashioned frosting is smooth, light, and not overly sweet. It’s made by cooking flour, sugar, and milk into a thick pudding, then whipping it into fluffy butter. The result? A silky, creamy frosting that’s perfect for layer cakes, cupcakes, or anywhere you want a not-too-sweet buttercream. 🤍

RECIPE
4 tablespoon flour
1 cup sugar
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
250 g butter (or Stork white margarine)
Optional: 2–4 tablespoon cocoa powder for chocolate frosting
Optional: Gel/powder food colouring
Method
1. Cook the base:In a saucepan, whisk together flour, sugar, and milk. Cook over medium heat, whisking continuously, until the mixture thickens to a pudding-like consistency.
2. Cool completely:Remove from heat, stir in vanilla essence, then pour into a bowl. Cover with clingwrap (touching the surface to prevent a skin from forming) and refrigerate until completely cool.
3. Beat the butter:In a mixing bowl, beat butter until pale, light, and fluffy.
4. Add the cooked mixture:Add the cooled flour mixture one tablespoon at a time, beating well after each addition until smooth and fluffy.
5. Flavour and colour:Add any additional flavouring, colouring, or cocoa powder and beat again until fully incorporated.
